department store и shopping mall.

  • Anna, you're right about a department store. But a shopping mall is a building or set of buildings where there are several or many different stores which are connected by walkways. In a shopping mall, you might find one or more department stores, music stores, bookstores, clothing stores, restaurants etc., etc. Take a look at this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shopping_mall

  • The Wikipedia article on "shopping mall" states that in the United Kingdom, shopping malls are called retail parks, out-of-town shopping centres, or precincts. Notice that in the United Kingdom, "center" is spelled "centre." Maxim is absolutely right. In oral speech, people usually say "mall." In written speech, such as in an article about business, the more formal term "shopping mall" might be used.
