"Black hawk down. A story of modern war" is written by well-known American journalist Mark Bowden in 2010. This book is the true account of a battle between American and Somali forces in the war-torn city of Mogadishu on October 3, 1993.
The US and other countries are concerned with the present situation in Somalia. Local people are dying because of the lack of food, medicaments and other vital things. The UN humanitarian assistance isn't as helpful as it is supposed to be due to local clans seizing the UN supplies. Mohamed Farrah Aidid appears to be the most powerful warlord in the country, and his activity undermines the UN efforts to help people in Somalia. In order to stabilize current situation as well as to let local militia start to form a new government, the US military command decides to capture Aidid and his top lieutenants. Pursuing this goal, the US army begins a combat operation called Gothic Serpent. Elite American special forces including 75th Ranger regiment, Delta Force and Navy Seals are dropped by helicopters into the central market in the heart of Mogadishu. Everything goes smooth, until one blunder launches the whole series of tragic events, turning a routine military operation into something completely unexpected.
The great strength of this book is realism as Mark Bowden talked personally with the soldiers who participated in that operation. Written in a really gripping style, the book make you read it quickly. It should be also noted that the writer gives point of view of local people who for some reasons were involved in the battle. My only criticism is that the author paid little attention to technical aspects of weaponry and tactics of spec-ops.
Not only is this an absolutely gripping and true book, but it also tackles problems which countries can face trying to establish "democracy" in underdeveloped countries. For all lovers of military history and Mark Bowden's fans is a must
