In all higher educational establishments for doctors the training takes
6 years. For the first two years students go through the so-called "pre-
clinical training"which includes such general subjects as physics, nmon-
organic chemistry and biological chemistry. The students also take a
course in gencral biology, human anatomy, physiology, Russian history
    and phylosophy.
Clinical subjects are taught from the third to the fifth year inclusively.
In this three-year period the students must become specialists in a definite
number of medical procedures, study to diagnose using instruments and
carry out laboratory analyses. At the and of the third year all students
undertake a six-weck practical course. The perform the duties of nurses.
After their fourth year the students have another practical course
lasting eight weeks, during which they act as doctor's assistants at the
    therapeutical, surgical and other departments.
After the fifth year they take a six-week practical course in out-patient
    clinics.

In their 6th year students are given mostly practical training in three
main clinical specialities: internal diseases, surgery, obstetrics and
gynecology, working in clinics as doctor's assistants. Under the guidance
of experienced professors and assistants they specialize in one of the
    medical disciplines.
After completing a full course of studies the medical students take state
examinations in clinical subjects, General Health Care and phylosophy.
After the 6 years of regular studies a one-year course of specialization has
been introduced. The aim of the course is to train specialists in the main
branches of clinical medicine. Then a young doctor takes a state
examination in his special subject only and receive a specialist's diploma.
Usually a young doctor returns to a curative establishment to which he
    was appointed upon graduation.
The wide development of medical research sciences made it
necessary to train young specialists capable of solving urgent problems.
In this respect post-graduateship system is very helpful.
In research institutes, at theoretical and clinical faculties of higher
educational establishments post-graduates undergo three-year course
during which they improve their knowledge of a particular branch of
medicine. They conduct researches and prepare theses which they defend in public. Then they receive the degree of a Candidate of Medical
    Sciences.
After the postgraduateship course doctors either continue with their
researches or are given teaching posts. Research workers and teaching
staff can also be trained during their working hours undergoing special
refresher courses. They combine their ordinary work with researches and
    prepare for a Candidate's or Doctor's thesis.
